Gravis (Forte) has not implemented multi-layer pathches yet. They have defined
the data structures in the patch but do not do anything with them.

The root does not have to be between the low and high values. The root specifies
what note was sampled at the specified sample rate. When the low and high values
are the same then that sample will only play on one note of the keyboard. For the
above example the GUS will play the 870.183 Hz sample back at the new frequency of
1244.507. That changes a sampled Flat A5 (almost 880Hz) into a D#6.
The Scale Freq & Factor are used to change the tuning of the whole sample but
I do not know how they are applied. You can see what the do by playing with the
patch editor.
